What should you know about hepatitis A ultrasound?

Ultrasound uses sound waves to create images of abdominal organs. It may help a clinician look for changes in the liver, gallbladder, or bile ducts and consider other explanations for jaundice or abdominal discomfort. Hepatitis A is usually assessed through the symptom history and blood tests, including tests that look for infection and a liver function test. A normal scan does not rule out the infection.

Follow the imaging service instructions, which may include a period without food. Tell the team about your symptoms, recent travel, possible food or water exposure, medicines, and pregnancy. Record when nausea, loss of appetite, dark urine, or feeling generally unwell began. Do not delay clinical advice while waiting for a scan appointment.

Seek prompt medical care for yellow skin or eyes, severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, confusion, marked drowsiness, or inability to keep fluids down. These signs require assessment because liver and other abdominal problems can need timely treatment. Ultrasound is an investigation, not a substitute for an examination.
