What should you know about hepatitis A typhoid vaccine?

Hepatitis A is a viral infection affecting the liver and can spread through contaminated food, water, or close contact. Typhoid is a bacterial infection that can also spread through contaminated food and water. Protection against one does not replace protection against the other. A clinician considers your destination, activities, accommodation, previous doses, age, pregnancy, immune health, and planned departure.

Arrange a travel-health appointment early enough to review your records and timing. Ask about food and water precautions even after vaccination. Bring the names and dates of previous vaccines, and mention medicines or conditions that affect immunity. If you feel unwell with nausea, loss of appetite, or feeling generally unwell after travel, seek advice and describe your itinerary.

Contact a clinician promptly after travel if you develop dark urine, yellowing of the skin or eyes, fever, vomiting, or worsening weakness. These symptoms can have several causes; they do not by themselves diagnose hepatitis A. A clinician may assess you and arrange a liver function test or other testing.
