A total positive hepatitis A antibody result usually shows past exposure or vaccination, but it cannot alone confirm a current infection. Total antibodies may include both protective antibodies and antibodies associated with recent infection. The report must be read alongside the specific IgM result, symptoms, liver tests, and timing.

If specific IgM is negative, total positivity commonly fits immunity from vaccination or an earlier infection. If IgM is positive, the clinician may consider recent or current hepatitis A and review symptoms and liver function.
