Hepatitis A symptoms in men are not defined by sex; they can start with feeling generally unwell, tiredness, nausea, reduced appetite or discomfort beneath the ribs. Some men later notice dark urine, pale stools or yellow skin and eyes. A man with any one of these symptoms does not automatically have hepatitis A, because several conditions can cause similar changes.

A clinician will consider exposure to contaminated food or water, close contact, travel and vaccination history. Blood tests can look for hepatitis A and assess liver inflammation. Mention all medicines, supplements and alcohol use accurately so the assessment is safer.

Arrange medical advice if symptoms persist, cluster together or include yellowing. Drink fluids, rest and choose manageable meals. Avoid alcohol and do not start painkillers, herbal products or supplements without checking whether they are suitable for your liver.

Hepatitis A can pass between people through contaminated hands, food or water. Wash hands after toilet use and before meals, and ask your clinician about avoiding food preparation for others while infection is being assessed. Partners or household contacts may need individual vaccination advice.

Seek urgent care for confusion, unusual difficulty staying awake, repeated vomiting, inability to keep fluids down, fainting, severe abdominal pain or rapidly worsening yellowing. New yellow eyes or skin also deserve prompt clinical review, even when other symptoms seem mild.
