What should you know about hepatitis A shot reactions?

Most hepatitis A shot reactions are short-lived effects near the injection site or mild whole-body symptoms, while severe allergy needs urgent help. The vaccine does not cause hepatitis A.

Soreness, redness, or swelling where the needle entered can occur. Some people feel tired, develop a headache, or have a mild fever. These effects reflect an immune response and often settle without specific treatment. A reaction can also be unrelated to vaccination, so symptoms that continue or change deserve review.

A rash with breathing difficulty, throat tightness, facial swelling, or collapse may signal a serious allergic reaction. That pattern is different from ordinary arm soreness. Call emergency services immediately for breathing trouble, swelling of the lips or tongue, widespread hives, fainting, or confusion soon after the shot.
