How serious is hepatitis A?

Short answer

Hepatitis A is often self-limited, but it can cause significant liver inflammation and occasionally becomes severe, so worsening symptoms need medical assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why severity varies

Hepatitis A affects the liver. Some people have mild illness or no noticeable symptoms, while others develop marked tiredness, nausea, reduced appetite, fever, abdominal discomfort, dark urine, or yellowing of the skin and eyes. Recovery can take time even after the acute illness improves. Older adults and people with existing liver disease may need closer medical supervision. Symptoms alone cannot show how inflamed the liver is, and a person with one symptom does not necessarily have hepatitis A. A clinician uses the history, examination, and appropriate blood tests to assess the cause and severity.

What assessment and support involve

Arrange medical advice if hepatitis A is suspected or you have had a relevant exposure. Rest, drink enough fluids if you can, and discuss medicines and supplements before taking them because the liver processes many products. Avoid preparing food for others until a clinician advises that it is appropriate, and follow careful hand hygiene. A Liver Function Test may be part of the assessment. Hepatitis A Vaccination can help prevent infection in suitable situations; it is not a treatment for established illness.

Warning signs that need urgent help

Seek urgent care for confusion, unusual sleepiness, severe or repeated vomiting, inability to keep fluids down, bleeding, severe abdominal pain, or rapidly worsening yellow skin or eyes. Contact a clinician promptly for Dark Urine, persistent Nausea, Loss of Appetite, or Feeling Generally Unwell, especially if several symptoms occur together or you have liver disease. Prompt assessment helps distinguish hepatitis A from other liver, digestive, or medication-related problems.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which tests are appropriate, whether medicines or supplements should be paused, how to protect household contacts, and what changes would mean you should return urgently.

Questions people ask

Is hepatitis A always severe?

No. Illness varies, but concerning or worsening symptoms still need assessment because severity cannot be judged from one symptom alone.

Can hepatitis A cause long-term liver infection?

Hepatitis A does not typically become a long-term infection, but recovery may take time and serious illness can occur, especially with other liver problems.
