What should you know about hepatitis A prognosis?

Short answer
Hepatitis A often improves as the body clears the infection, although tiredness and other symptoms may last for weeks.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Course
- Hepatitis A is usually a temporary infection rather than a chronic one.
- Recovery
- Energy and appetite may return at different speeds.
- Monitoring
- Follow-up may include symptom review and liver-related blood tests.
Understanding the outlook
Hepatitis A is an infection of the liver. Unlike hepatitis B or C, it does not normally become a long-term infection. The illness can begin with feeling generally unwell, nausea or loss of appetite, followed by jaundice or dark urine in some people. Symptoms and energy levels do not always improve together.
Most people recover with supportive care, but the course can be more serious in people with existing liver disease or other health concerns. A prognosis cannot be set from one symptom or one test result; clinicians consider your examination, medical history and liver test findings.
Supporting recovery
Rest when needed, drink enough fluid to avoid dehydration, and eat small meals if appetite is reduced. Avoid alcohol and check before taking medicines or supplements because the liver processes many products. Keep follow-up appointments so your clinician can review symptoms and a Liver Function Test when appropriate.
Reduce spread by washing hands thoroughly and avoiding food preparation for other people while advised. Household contacts can ask about Hepatitis A Vaccination after a possible exposure.
When the outlook needs review
Seek medical advice if jaundice is worsening, vomiting prevents drinking, or symptoms are not gradually easing. Get urgent help for confusion, unusual sleepiness, fainting, bleeding, severe abdominal pain or inability to keep fluids down.
Questions for your doctor
Ask how your test results fit the illness, which medicines to avoid, how to protect household contacts, and what changes should trigger an earlier review.
