How is itching from hepatitis A treated?

Itching can occur when hepatitis A affects the liver and the movement of bile. It may be widespread or more noticeable at night, and scratching can break the skin. Itching may occur alongside yellowing, dark urine, nausea, poor appetite, or tiredness. The symptom does not show how severe the liver problem is on its own, so mention its timing, location, and effect on sleep to a clinician. Other causes, including skin conditions or medicines, can also produce itching.

Keep the skin cool, wear loose breathable clothing, and use a plain moisturiser if the skin is dry. Short, lukewarm showers may be more comfortable than hot water. Pat rather than rub after washing, keep nails short, and use a cool compress when an area feels intensely itchy. Drink fluids regularly unless a clinician has told you to restrict them. Do not start antihistamines, herbal products, or other treatments without checking first, because some products may not suit a liver illness. A clinician can discuss Hepatitis A and arrange a Liver Function Test when needed.

Seek medical advice if itching is severe, prevents sleep, causes open sores, or appears with yellowing or dark urine. Prompt assessment is needed for repeated vomiting, worsening abdominal pain, confusion, unusual drowsiness, or inability to drink. Nausea, Loss of Appetite, and Feeling Generally Unwell can accompany hepatitis A, but itching also has other possible explanations.
