What is hepatitis A transmitted through?

Transmission is often difficult to notice because contamination may be invisible. It can occur when an infected person does not wash their hands thoroughly after toileting and then handles food, utensils, or surfaces. Raw food, unsafe water, and food handled by someone who is infected can carry the virus. Contact in a household, childcare setting, or sexual situation may increase exposure when hygiene is difficult. Hepatitis A infects the liver. Some people have no obvious symptoms, while others develop nausea, reduced appetite, fever, tiredness, abdominal discomfort, dark urine, or yellowing of the eyes and skin.

Use soap and running water for handwashing, especially after toileting and before meals or food preparation. Keep bathroom areas clean and avoid preparing meals for others if you are unwell. If a household member or close contact has hepatitis A, call a healthcare professional promptly; post-exposure vaccination may be considered depending on the circumstances. Contact a clinician if you notice yellowing, dark urine, ongoing vomiting, significant loss of appetite, or unusual exhaustion. Seek prompt advice after a known exposure, even without symptoms, because prevention may be time-sensitive. Go to urgent care for confusion, severe weakness, dehydration, or severe abdominal pain. Feeling Generally Unwell or Nausea may occur with hepatitis A, but neither symptom identifies the cause by itself.
