Hepatitis A infection treatment: what to know

Hepatitis A is managed according to symptoms and overall health. There is usually no routine medicine that removes the virus immediately; care supports the body while the liver recovers. A clinician may review symptoms, medicines, hydration, and liver blood tests. Nausea, poor appetite, tiredness, and dark urine can change over the course of illness. Most people improve with supportive care, but recovery may be gradual.

Rest when fatigue is strong and sip fluids regularly. Eat small, plain meals when appetite is low, and do not drink alcohol. Before using pain relievers, herbal products, or non-prescription medicines, ask a clinician or pharmacist because some products can burden the liver. Contact a clinician promptly if vomiting prevents drinking, urine becomes very dark, yellowing increases, pain becomes severe, or marked weakness develops. Emergency help is needed for confusion, collapse, or difficulty staying awake. Seek earlier advice if you are pregnant, have liver disease, or take medicines that affect the liver.
