Short answer

Hepatitis A in children is a contagious liver infection that usually needs supportive care, monitoring and prevention of spread.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What hepatitis A means for a child

The virus can inflame the liver and spread when tiny amounts of infected stool reach another person's mouth, including through contaminated hands, food or water. Children may have few symptoms, while others develop feeling generally unwell, nausea, loss of appetite, tummy discomfort, fever or yellowing of the skin and eyes. Dark urine can occur as liver inflammation affects bile processing. A child with symptoms may need assessment, and a clinician may use a liver function test alongside other checks.

Most children recover with rest, fluids and regular meals as tolerated. Medicines should be checked with a clinician because the inflamed liver may handle some products differently. Hepatitis A does not usually become a lifelong infection, but a child can pass it to household members while infectious.

Practical steps at home

Offer frequent drinks and simple foods without forcing meals. Encourage careful handwashing with soap after using the toilet and before preparing or eating food. Do not share towels, toothbrushes or eating utensils, and clean bathroom touchpoints regularly. Keep the child away from school, nursery or food preparation according to the clinician's advice and local public-health instructions. Ask whether hepatitis A vaccination is suitable for the child and close contacts, especially after a known exposure or before travel.

When to seek medical care

Arrange prompt medical advice for yellow skin or eyes, dark urine, repeated vomiting, worsening abdominal pain, unusual sleepiness, confusion, poor drinking or markedly reduced urination. Seek urgent help if the child is difficult to wake, cannot keep fluids down or appears severely unwell. Contact a clinician even when symptoms are mild if hepatitis A exposure is possible, because early advice can help protect household and childcare contacts.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which tests are appropriate, how much fluid and activity are reasonable, which medicines to avoid, when the child can return to school, and whether vaccination or contact advice is needed.
