Short answer

A hepatitis A immunity test is a blood test that looks for antibodies and helps a clinician decide whether you have protection, recent infection, or need further assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Sample
Usually blood, interpreted with your history.
Result
May indicate protection, recent infection or no detected immunity.
Related symptoms
Dark urine, nausea and reduced appetite need context.

How the result is understood

Different antibody findings can reflect immunity from past infection or vaccination, or a recent infection. The meaning depends on which test was ordered and when symptoms, exposure or vaccination occurred. A result showing no detectable protection does not explain every stomach symptom and does not replace advice about prevention.

Hepatitis A can cause nausea, loss of appetite, feeling generally unwell and dark urine, but these symptoms also have many other causes. A clinician may combine the result with an examination, exposure history and a liver function test.

What to do before and after testing

Tell the clinician about previous hepatitis A vaccination, possible contact with an infected person, travel, liver conditions, pregnancy and medicines. Ask when the result will be available and whether another sample or liver assessment is needed. If you are not immune, discuss Hepatitis A Vaccination and practical steps to reduce exposure.

While waiting, wash hands thoroughly, especially after toilet use and before handling food. Avoid preparing food for other people if you have vomiting or diarrhoea until a clinician gives you advice.

When to seek care

Seek prompt advice for yellow skin or eyes, dark urine, repeated vomiting, inability to drink, unusual sleepiness or worsening abdominal illness. Urgent care is appropriate for confusion, severe weakness or signs of dehydration. Do not wait for a test result if symptoms are rapidly worsening.

Useful questions

Ask which antibody test was ordered, whether the result indicates protection or possible recent infection, and whether timing could affect interpretation. Ask if you need a liver function test, vaccination or repeat review.

Questions people ask

Does a positive immunity result always mean current hepatitis A?

No. Some antibody patterns indicate protection from vaccination or past infection; the ordered test matters.

Can symptoms alone show that I lack immunity?

No. Symptoms cannot establish immunity, so testing and clinical history may be needed.
