What does non-reactive hepatitis A IgM mean?

IgM is used as a clue to a recent hepatitis A immune response. Non-reactive means the laboratory did not detect the antibody at the level used for that report. The result may fit no recent infection, a different explanation for symptoms, or testing at a time when the antibody pattern is not yet clear. IgG, vaccination history, exposure timing, symptoms, and liver function results provide useful context. Nausea, dark urine, loss of appetite, and feeling generally unwell can arise from many conditions, so a non-reactive result does not diagnose their cause.

Share the full report with a clinician and explain when symptoms began, whether you recently travelled, and whether you received hepatitis A vaccination. Ask whether IgG or a liver function test is appropriate. Repeat testing may be considered when the first sample was taken early or the clinical picture remains concerning. Until you have advice, maintain hand hygiene, use safe food practices, and avoid preparing food for others if you are unwell.

Arrange prompt review for yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine with worsening illness, ongoing vomiting, or difficulty keeping fluids down. Seek urgent help for confusion, extreme sleepiness, fainting, or rapidly worsening symptoms. A non-reactive IgM does not make severe symptoms safe to ignore.
