How to understand hepatitis A IgG and IgM antibodies

IgM is an early antibody response and may be present around a recent hepatitis A illness. IgG develops as longer-lasting immune memory and may remain after recovery or vaccination. A pattern such as IgM positive with or without IgG can support recent infection, while IgG positive with IgM non-reactive more often fits past exposure or vaccination. Test interpretation is not mechanical: symptoms, timing, laboratory comments, and liver function results can change the clinical meaning. Nausea, loss of appetite, dark urine, and feeling generally unwell are possible hepatitis A symptoms, but they are not specific to it.

Show the complete report to a clinician, including whether each antibody is reactive, non-reactive, or indeterminate. Give the date symptoms began, any travel or food exposure, and your vaccination history. The clinician may review a liver function test and decide whether repeat testing is useful. Until you receive advice, wash hands carefully after using the toilet and before preparing food, and avoid preparing food for others if you are ill.

Seek prompt medical review for yellowing of the eyes or skin, worsening dark urine, persistent vomiting, or inability to maintain fluids. Get urgent help for confusion, severe drowsiness, or rapidly worsening illness. Antibody results should be interpreted alongside symptoms rather than used to dismiss them.
