What should you know about hepatitis A IgG?

IgG is one type of antibody made by the immune system. It can remain detectable after the body has encountered the hepatitis A virus or after vaccination. The result needs to be read alongside your symptoms, travel or exposure history, and any other blood-test results.

Hepatitis A affects the liver and is caused by a virus. A positive IgG result by itself does not tell when immunity developed, so it cannot distinguish past infection from previous vaccination. It also does not establish that new symptoms are due to hepatitis A.

When clinicians are checking for a recent hepatitis A infection, they may request hepatitis A IgM and liver blood tests as well. Raised liver enzymes or bilirubin may support a liver problem, but their meaning depends on the full clinical picture.

Keep a copy of the result and check whether the report names IgG, IgM, or total antibody. Tell the clinician who ordered the test about any hepatitis A vaccination, recent travel, close contact with someone who was unwell, or food and water exposures.

If you are not known to be immune and may be at risk of exposure, discuss Hepatitis A Vaccination with a clinician. If liver symptoms are present, a Liver Function Test may be used with other tests to clarify what is happening.

Arrange prompt medical assessment if you develop yellow skin or eyes, dark urine, pale stools, vomiting that prevents fluids staying down, significant abdominal pain, or confusion. These symptoms can occur with liver or other illnesses and need assessment rather than interpretation from an antibody result alone.

Contact a clinician soon for ongoing nausea, loss of appetite, fever, or feeling generally unwell, particularly after a possible exposure. Avoid alcohol and do not start or stop medicines or supplements for a suspected liver problem without clinical advice.

Ask whether your result includes IgM testing, whether your current symptoms call for liver tests, and whether you are considered immune. You can also ask whether vaccination or any follow-up testing is appropriate for your circumstances.
