Can hepatitis A cause cirrhosis?

Hepatitis A does not usually cause cirrhosis because it does not normally remain as a chronic liver infection. Cirrhosis develops when ongoing liver injury causes scarring over time, so a separate liver condition may need consideration if scarring is suspected. Testing can clarify whether current symptoms fit hepatitis A or another problem.

Hepatitis A can temporarily inflame liver cells and cause feeling generally unwell, nausea, poor appetite, or dark urine. Cirrhosis is a pattern of lasting scar tissue that can affect how the liver works. Having symptoms linked with hepatitis A does not by itself show cirrhosis, and a person with cirrhosis may have another cause of liver disease.

Arrange a review if symptoms persist, return, or occur alongside known liver disease. A clinician may combine an examination, blood tests, and a liver function test; further assessment depends on those findings. Avoid alcohol while unwell and check every medicine, herbal product, or supplement with a professional before using it. Hepatitis A vaccination can help prevent infection in people for whom it is recommended.

Seek urgent medical care for confusion, unusual sleepiness, vomiting that prevents drinking, severe abdominal swelling or pain, bleeding, or new yellowing of the skin or eyes. If you already have liver disease, contact your care team promptly when an acute illness is suspected.
