What should you know about hepatitis A and cancer?

Hepatitis A does not cause chronic infection and is not considered a cause of liver cancer. It can inflame the liver for a period of illness, but the infection generally clears rather than remaining in the body. A concern about cancer still deserves a proper medical assessment because symptoms can overlap with other liver problems.

Hepatitis A spreads mainly when the virus reaches the mouth through contaminated food, water, hands, or close contact. It may cause feeling generally unwell, nausea, loss of appetite, or dark urine. These symptoms can occur with hepatitis A but do not identify cancer; a clinician uses your history, examination, and tests to work out the cause.

Arrange a medical review if you have symptoms or think you have been exposed. A liver function test can show how the liver is responding, while specific blood testing may help identify hepatitis A. Rest, drink fluids if you can, and check with a clinician before taking medicines or supplements that may affect the liver. Ask about hepatitis A vaccination for future prevention.

Seek prompt medical help for yellowing of the skin or eyes, worsening vomiting, confusion, unusual sleepiness, severe abdominal pain, or difficulty keeping fluids down. Urgent assessment is also sensible when symptoms are rapidly worsening or you have known liver disease.
