Hepatitis A and B combination vaccine

Hepatitis A commonly spreads through contaminated food, water, or hands. Hepatitis B spreads through infected blood or body fluids. They are different viruses, so protection against one does not automatically protect against the other. A combined product is designed to provide protection against both, while the schedule depends on the vaccine, your age, health, previous doses, and reason for vaccination.

Temporary soreness, tiredness, or feeling generally unwell can occur after vaccination. Nausea or appetite changes may also happen for many reasons and should not automatically be attributed to hepatitis.

Vaccination does not treat an existing infection, so symptoms such as dark urine may need separate assessment. A liver function test may be considered when liver inflammation is suspected.

Seek urgent help after vaccination for breathing difficulty, swelling of the face or throat, collapse, or widespread hives. Contact a clinician promptly for yellow eyes or skin, persistent vomiting, severe abdominal pain, or unusual drowsiness. These symptoms need assessment rather than being assumed to be a routine vaccine response.
