What does hepatitis A total antibody reactive mean?

Reactive is the laboratory's term for antibody detection. Total hepatitis A antibody testing may capture more than one type of immune response, so the word reactive cannot date an infection on its own. A clinician considers the IgM result, symptoms, vaccination record, possible exposure, and liver blood tests.

Ask for the full report and check whether it names total antibody, IgM, or another marker. Make a note of vaccine dates, previous liver problems, recent travel, food or water exposures, and when symptoms began. Seek immediate medical advice for confusion, severe vomiting, inability to drink, severe abdominal pain, unusual bleeding, or rapidly worsening yellow skin or eyes. A reactive result without these warning signs still deserves explanation, but it does not by itself establish an emergency.
