What should you know about a hepatitis A Ab IgM test?

IgM is an antibody type that the immune system can produce around a recent infection. A reactive result may support recent hepatitis A, but it is not interpreted in isolation. Symptoms, timing, examination findings and other liver blood tests help the clinician judge whether the result fits the illness.

A non-reactive result makes recent hepatitis A less likely, but timing and the reason for testing still matter. Early testing, another cause of symptoms or a need for a different antibody test can change the next step. Nausea, loss of appetite, feeling generally unwell, dark urine and jaundice may occur with hepatitis A, although symptoms vary.

Share the complete report and the date of symptoms or possible exposure with the clinician who ordered it. Do not self-diagnose from the word reactive or non-reactive. Until clarified, wash hands carefully, avoid preparing food for others if you are unwell, and ask before taking alcohol, medicines or supplements that may affect the liver. Close contacts may need specific advice about testing or vaccination.

Get urgent help for confusion, severe sleepiness, repeated vomiting, inability to keep fluids down, bleeding, severe abdominal pain or rapidly worsening yellow skin or eyes. Contact a clinician promptly if symptoms are progressing even before the test result is available.

Ask whether the result fits your symptoms and timing, whether a liver function test or repeat antibody testing is needed, how long precautions should continue, and whether close contacts need hepatitis A vaccination.
