What should you know about hemofilus influenza?

Haemophilus influenzae can live in the nose or throat without causing illness, but some strains can cause infections in the ear, chest, blood or the lining around the brain. Influenza is a separate viral infection. Cough, Fever, Chills, Fatigue, Headache and Feeling Generally Unwell can occur with many respiratory illnesses, so symptoms alone cannot identify the germ. Pneumonia is a possible serious chest infection and needs clinical assessment.

Contact a clinician if symptoms are severe, persistent or worsening, particularly in a young child, older adult or person with a weakened immune system. A clinician may examine the chest, ears or throat and decide whether testing is needed. Antibiotics treat selected bacterial infections, not influenza viruses; never use leftover antibiotics or share them. Rest, fluids and avoiding close contact while feverish can support recovery, alongside the advice given for your specific illness.

Seek emergency care for difficulty breathing, blue or grey lips, severe drowsiness, confusion, a seizure, stiff neck, a severe headache, persistent vomiting, or inability to keep fluids down. A baby with poor feeding or unusual sleepiness also needs prompt assessment. Chest pain, rapidly worsening cough or signs of dehydration should not be managed only at home.
