Why asthma changes the discussion
Hemabate is used in obstetric care for specific bleeding or uterine situations. Its effects can tighten airway muscles, triggering wheezing, cough or chest tightness in someone with asthma. Tell the team about current control, inhalers and previous severe attacks; do not stop prescribed treatment independently.
What to tell the care team
Tell the obstetrician, midwife or emergency clinician about asthma, every inhaler and any recent breathing changes. Ask which alternatives may suit you and how breathing will be monitored. Keep a reliever inhaler available if advised. Do not self-treat new breathing symptoms or delay assessment.
Breathing symptoms needing urgent care
Seek urgent help for sudden wheezing, chest tightness, severe cough, difficult breathing, inability to speak comfortably, blue or grey lips, faintness or poor response to your usual reliever. After Hemabate, report any breathing change immediately. Nebuliser treatment may be used by clinicians during a severe attack, but it does not replace emergency assessment.
