What should you know about heavy chest asthma?

Asthma can cause swelling and muscle tightening around the airways. You may notice a heavy or squeezed feeling, wheezing, coughing, or breathlessness. Symptoms can follow exercise, cold air, smoke, dust, pollen, or a respiratory infection. Allergic Rhinitis and House Dust Mite Allergy can aggravate asthma in some people; the presence of a symptom does not identify one cause.

Stop the activity, sit upright, and move away from smoke, dust, or another known trigger. Use your prescribed reliever inhaler exactly as your asthma action plan says; do not borrow another person’s inhaler. Keep taking controller treatment as prescribed, even when symptoms settle, and arrange a review if episodes are recurring, waking you, or limiting activity. A clinician may check inhaler technique and discuss whether a nebuliser treatment is appropriate.

Call emergency services immediately if breathing is severely difficult, you cannot speak in full sentences, your lips look blue or grey, you become confused or faint, or your reliever is not helping. Seek prompt medical assessment for new chest pressure, rapidly worsening wheeze, or symptoms after an allergic exposure. Do not drive yourself if breathing is seriously impaired.

Ask what triggers are most likely, whether your inhaler technique is effective, when to use your reliever, and what warning signs belong in your written asthma action plan. Mention night symptoms, exercise limitation, and how often you need rescue medicine.
