What should you know about heartbeat feels irregular?

Short answer

An irregular-feeling heartbeat can be a brief extra beat or an abnormal rhythm, so recurring episodes deserve an ECG-based medical assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why the rhythm may feel uneven

You may notice skipped beats, pauses, fluttering or a pattern that seems chaotic. Stress, poor sleep, caffeine, nicotine, alcohol, fever and some medicines can make beats more noticeable. Atrial fibrillation is one condition that can present with an irregular pulse, but the sensation alone cannot confirm it. Some people have no other symptoms; others have breathlessness, tiredness, chest discomfort or dizziness.

Record when the sensation begins, how long it lasts, whether it is continuous, and whether your pulse feels consistently uneven or only has occasional extra beats. This information can help a clinician choose an ECG or longer rhythm monitoring.

What to do next

Stop strenuous activity during symptoms and sit safely. Avoid stimulants until you have been assessed, and take only medicines prescribed for you. Book a medical review for a first episode, repeated irregular beats, or symptoms with exertion. An ECG records the heart’s electrical pattern; further assessment may consider blood pressure, thyroid function and other causes. Do not start or stop anticoagulation management without clinical advice.

When to seek urgent care

Seek emergency help for an irregular heartbeat with chest pain, severe breathlessness, fainting, collapse, sudden weakness on one side, facial drooping, trouble speaking, or a sudden severe headache. These neurological features can signal a stroke or transient ischaemic attack. Get urgent advice if you feel light-headed or the rhythm remains very fast and uneven.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether you need an ECG, a longer rhythm check or blood tests. Ask what symptoms suggest atrial fibrillation, how stroke risk is assessed, and whether any treatment or anticoagulation management is appropriate for you.

Questions people ask

Does an irregular heartbeat always mean atrial fibrillation?

No. Occasional extra beats and other triggers can feel uneven; an ECG or rhythm monitor is needed to identify the pattern.

Can dizziness happen with an irregular rhythm?

Yes. Reduced or uneven blood flow can make some people dizzy, especially during a sustained episode, and severe dizziness needs urgent assessment.
