Heart palpitations and cough

A cough can briefly alter pressure in the chest and make a heartbeat feel more noticeable. Conversely, breathlessness or fluid congestion associated with heart failure can be accompanied by cough and palpitations. A chest infection, asthma, reflux, anxiety, dehydration, or a medicine may produce symptoms that overlap without one causing the other.

An irregular rhythm such as atrial fibrillation can cause palpitations and reduced exercise tolerance, while anaemia or an overactive thyroid may cause a noticeable heartbeat with breathlessness. The pattern matters: note whether the cough comes before, during, or after the fluttering.

Rest, avoid exertion while symptoms are active, and record the episode, including cough type, breathlessness, fever, pulse, and possible triggers. Drink fluids if you have lost fluid and avoid smoking or extra stimulants. Book a clinical assessment if the combination keeps returning, is worsening, or has no clear short-lived trigger.

Call emergency services for chest pain, severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, fainting, coughing blood, or palpitations with collapse or profound weakness. Prompt assessment is also needed for new symptoms with swelling, breathlessness when lying down, or a persistent irregular heartbeat.
