Can GERD cause heart palpitations?

Reflux can cause burning behind the breastbone, sour fluid in the mouth, burping and discomfort after meals or when lying down. Chest discomfort, worry, poor sleep and dehydration may make a heartbeat feel more noticeable. Some people describe skipped beats, fluttering or a brief racing sensation. Other possible causes include anaemia, iron deficiency anaemia, an overactive thyroid, low blood sugar, dehydration, anxiety, an irregular rhythm such as atrial fibrillation, or heart failure. The pattern matters: note whether the sensation starts with reflux, follows exertion, lasts continuously, or occurs with dizziness.

Record when the palpitations happen, how long they last, what you were doing, and whether they follow a meal or lying down. Reduce personal reflux triggers, choose smaller meals, avoid lying down soon after eating, and raise the head end of the bed if night symptoms occur. Drink fluids unless a clinician has restricted them. Arrange a medical review if episodes recur, become more frequent, or feel different. A clinician may review medicines and check your pulse, heart rhythm and blood tests.

Seek emergency help for palpitations with chest pressure, severe breathlessness, fainting, new confusion, or marked weakness. Get urgent assessment if a fast or irregular heartbeat does not settle, or if symptoms begin during exertion. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint. Reflux symptoms do not make these warning signs safe to ignore.
