Headache after a nosebleed: what to know

Dry air, nose picking, allergies, a cold, forceful blowing or nasal irritation can trigger bleeding and pressure around the nose and forehead. Swallowing blood may upset the stomach, while fear and muscle tension can add head pain. A nosebleed and headache can also occur with an underlying illness or a blood-pressure problem, so the pattern and severity matter.

Sit upright, lean slightly forward and pinch the soft part of the nose continuously while breathing through your mouth. Once bleeding has stopped, avoid blowing or picking the nose, heavy exertion and very hot drinks for a while. Rest, drink fluids and use a suitable pain reliever only after checking with a pharmacist, especially if you take blood-thinning medicine. Arrange review if bleeding repeats or the headache continues.

Get urgent help if bleeding is heavy, follows a head injury, does not stop with firm pressure, or causes faintness, weakness or breathing trouble. Emergency assessment is needed for a sudden severe headache, confusion, vision or speech changes, one-sided weakness, repeated vomiting, or a very high blood-pressure reading with symptoms.
