Headache after a bloody nose: what to know

Dry air, rubbing, allergies and forceful nose blowing can irritate the lining of the nose. Congestion from Allergic Rhinitis or Chronic Sinusitis can create pressure around the forehead, cheeks or eyes. Heat, limited fluids and emotional strain may also contribute. The headache is not proof of a particular condition. Note whether it began before or after the bleeding, where it is located, and whether fever, vomiting, faintness or vision changes are present.

Sit upright and lean slightly forward if bleeding continues; pinch the soft part of the nose continuously for several minutes and breathe through the mouth. Do not tilt the head back or repeatedly check too soon. Rest somewhere cool, sip fluids if you can swallow safely, and avoid strenuous activity or nose blowing for the rest of the day. Use only pain medicine that is suitable for you and follow its label; ask a pharmacist if you take blood-thinning medicine.

Seek emergency help for a sudden severe headache, confusion, weakness, trouble speaking, fainting, stiff neck, repeated vomiting, a head injury, or bleeding that is heavy or does not stop with firm pressure. Arrange medical assessment when headaches recur with nosebleeds, the bleeding is frequent, or you have fever and worsening facial pain. Dehydration and Heat Exhaustion can need attention when dizziness, very dark urine or marked weakness accompany the headache.

Ask whether dry nasal passages, allergy symptoms, sinus congestion, medicines or blood pressure concerns could be contributing. Tell the clinician how long the bleeding lasted, how often this has happened, and which medicines or supplements you use.
