What vacuuming can and cannot do

Head lice live on the scalp and cling to hair, where a household vacuum cannot safely or reliably treat the infestation. Vacuuming floors, sofas, and car seats can remove shed hairs, but head lice do not survive well away from a person. Focus on the scalp rather than trying to disinfect every surface. An itchy scalp or night-time itching may have causes other than lice, so inspect for live insects.

A practical cleaning plan

Treat confirmed live lice with a suitable labelled product or wet combing. Wash or seal recently used pillowcases, hats, and towels as advised, and avoid sharing personal hair items. Vacuum commonly used upholstered areas if it reassures you, then empty the appliance safely; never use a vacuum directly on the scalp or hair. Check close contacts and reduce hair-to-hair contact until treatment is complete.

When to seek medical advice
