Why is your head itchy after lice treatment?

The scalp may remain inflamed after scratching or exposure to a treatment lotion. Itching alone does not prove that lice are still present. Check the hair close to the scalp in good light: moving lice are more useful evidence than empty or old nits attached farther along the hair shaft. Redness, burning, swelling, or a rash can point to irritation from the product. A fresh infestation is possible when live lice are found or close contacts were not checked.

Follow the product instructions exactly and do not repeat an application early or combine lice products. Use a fine-toothed comb on wet, conditioned hair to check systematically, wiping the comb after each pass. Wash or isolate recently used hair items according to local treatment advice, and avoid sharing combs, hats, or pillows until the household plan is clear. A cool rinse and gentle, fragrance-free cleanser may soothe irritation; avoid scratching and harsh oils.

Arrange medical advice if live lice remain after correctly following the treatment directions, if itching is worsening rather than settling, or if several household members are affected. Seek prompt care for spreading redness, warmth, pus, marked swelling, fever, or painful sores, because scratching can damage the skin and allow infection. Breathing difficulty or swelling of the lips or face after a product needs emergency help.

Ask whether the scalp findings show active lice, treatment irritation, or another itchy-scalp condition; whether a repeat treatment is appropriate; and which soothing products are safe for your age, pregnancy status, or skin sensitivity.
