Can Head and Shoulders help an itchy scalp?

Dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis commonly present with scalp itch and flaking. Folliculitis can cause itchy, tender bumps around hairs; scalp psoriasis may produce thicker, sharply defined scale; and head lice can cause intense itch, especially behind the ears and at the neck. Shampoo residue, fragrance, dye, or other contact irritants can also inflame the scalp.

Use the product exactly as labelled and rinse the scalp well. Keep nails short, avoid picking, and pause recently introduced dyes, oils, or fragranced products if symptoms began after using them. Do not share combs, brushes, hats, or towels if lice are possible. If regular care does not help, a clinician may recommend medicated shampoo therapy or head lice treatment after examining the scalp.

Seek an appointment for persistent itch, spreading redness, thick plaques, pus-filled bumps, crusting, patchy hair loss, or visible nits. Get urgent help for facial swelling, widespread hives, or breathing difficulty after a product. Scratching can break the skin and allow infection, so worsening soreness or drainage deserves prompt attention.

Ask whether the scalp shows dandruff, psoriasis, folliculitis, lice, or contact irritation; how long to try a treatment; and which products to avoid. Tell the clinician about household itching, new cosmetics, and any sores or hair shedding.
