Perioral dermatitis commonly presents with clusters of small red or skin-coloured bumps around the mouth, nose, or eyes. Burning, dryness, scaling, and sensitivity may occur. Shampoo ingredients can run onto facial skin and irritate it, particularly when the skin barrier is already reactive. The appearance can overlap with acne or contact irritation, so a diagnosis needs the location and pattern, not just the presence of pimples.

Keep shampoo away from the face, rinse thoroughly, and simplify skincare if products sting. Avoid starting or repeatedly applying steroid creams to the area without medical direction; topical corticosteroids can contribute to or aggravate this condition. A dermatologist may prescribe topical antibiotic therapy or, for more extensive disease, oral antibiotics. Use only treatments selected for facial skin and your circumstances.

Arrange review if the rash is spreading, recurrent, painful, crusted, or affecting the eyes. Seek prompt care for eye pain, light sensitivity, vision change, facial swelling, or signs of infection. Medical assessment is worthwhile when a new product preceded the eruption or when stopping an unsupervised steroid cream has been difficult.
