Aquaphor and perioral dermatitis

Although it can reduce dryness on unaffected skin, applying it over an active eruption may trap moisture and products against the face. Stop if bumps, burning, or redness increase.

Perioral dermatitis commonly presents with clusters of small red or skin-coloured bumps around the mouth. Similar lesions can appear beside the nose or eyes, while a narrow rim next to the lips may remain clear.

The skin may burn, sting, feel tight, or flake. Acne, rosacea, contact dermatitis, and infection can resemble this pattern, so squeezing the bumps or layering acne treatments may worsen irritation without clarifying the cause.

Pause heavy ointments and unnecessary cosmetics on the affected area, wash with lukewarm water or a very gentle cleanser, and protect the face from rubbing. Keep a list of skin care, makeup, sunscreen, toothpaste, nasal sprays, and medicines used near the rash.

Do not start a topical steroid on the face without medical direction. If one was prescribed, contact the prescriber before changing it abruptly, because withdrawal can trigger a rebound flare and may need a planned approach.

Arrange a clinician visit when the eruption persists, spreads, repeatedly returns, or becomes painful. Diagnosis matters because prescription topical or oral medicines may be considered, while treatments used for acne or eczema can irritate this condition.

Seek urgent help for facial swelling, trouble breathing, eye pain, vision changes, rapidly spreading redness, fever, or pus with worsening tenderness. These are not features to manage with an occlusive ointment alone.

Ask which products could be maintaining the eruption, whether any steroid should be tapered, what gentle moisturiser and sunscreen are suitable, and when improvement should be reassessed. Mention pregnancy or breastfeeding before discussing prescription medicines.
