What should you know about hand MRI scan?

MRI can help assess an unexplained lump, persistent pain, swelling, injury, infection or changes seen on another scan. It can show the relationship between a finding and nearby nerves, vessels, tendons and bone. The images are interpreted with your examination and history; an MRI appearance alone may not identify the exact cause.

Some examinations use contrast medicine through a vein to make certain tissues easier to distinguish. The radiology team will check kidney problems, allergies and previous reactions before deciding whether contrast is suitable.

Tell the imaging team about pacemakers, metal fragments, implants, medication pumps, pregnancy and severe anxiety in enclosed spaces. Remove jewellery and other metal items as instructed. During the scan, keep your hand still while the scanner makes loud knocking sounds; ear protection is provided, and you can communicate with the team.

After contrast, seek prompt help for trouble breathing, facial swelling, widespread rash or faintness. Otherwise, contact the referring clinician if pain, swelling, numbness or weakness worsens while you wait for the result, especially after an injury or procedure.

Ask what the scan is looking for, whether contrast is planned, how long the report may take, and whether a biopsy or another test could be needed if the images show an unclear area.
