Hallux rigidus imaging: what to understand

Hallux rigidus is a stiff, painful joint at the base of the big toe. A clinician may request weight-bearing foot X-rays to view the joint while it carries load. Images can help show narrowing of the joint space, extra bone around the joint and changes in alignment. Imaging does not measure every part of pain, and visible changes do not by themselves decide treatment. Your history, toe movement, walking pattern and shoe tolerance add context. Bring a clear description of where pain occurs, which shoes aggravate it and whether the toe feels stiff at rest or during push-off. Arrange review for persistent pain, worsening stiffness, recurrent swelling or difficulty fitting ordinary shoes. Seek prompt care for sudden redness and heat, fever, an open wound, severe pain after trauma or inability to walk. These signs may point to an acute problem requiring examination.
