What to know about professional hair-removal machines

Professional hair reduction may use a laser or another light-based system. The energy is absorbed mainly by pigment in the hair and converted to heat near the follicle. Because follicles cycle through growth phases, a course of appointments is usually needed, and some regrowth can occur over time. Device choice depends on skin tone, hair colour, thickness, location, and the practitioner’s assessment.

Alexandrite Laser, Diode Laser, and Nd:YAG Laser are different technologies with different wavelength and skin-safety considerations. A suitable setting should balance hair targeting with protection of the surrounding skin. Darker or recently tanned skin may require extra caution, altered settings, or postponement.

Tell the practitioner about tanning, pigment changes, cold sores, active skin disease, scarring, medications, and previous reactions to light-based treatment. Avoid tanning before treatment and follow the clinic’s instructions about shaving and skincare. Do not pluck or wax shortly beforehand if the follicle needs to contain the hair for the light to target it.

During treatment, protective eyewear and cooling may be used. Mild warmth, snapping sensations, redness, or swelling around follicles can occur temporarily. Follow aftercare advice, including gentle cleansing and sun protection, and avoid picking or irritating treated skin.
