Nd:YAG Laser: Uses, Limits and What to Expect

An Nd:YAG laser delivers concentrated light at a wavelength that can reach deeper skin targets while limiting energy at the surface.

An Nd:YAG laser is a device that produces a focused beam of infrared light, commonly described as a 1064nm laser. Its wavelength can travel farther into skin than some lighter-wavelength devices. A clinician selects the pulse style, energy and spot size according to the target, skin tone and treatment area.

The light may be absorbed by pigment, hair structures or selected tissue targets. In laser hair removal, the goal is to heat the hair follicle while protecting the surrounding surface as far as possible. Nd:YAG systems are also used in some approaches to nail fungus, where the clinician directs energy at affected nails and surrounding tissue. Treatment plans often involve a series of appointments because hair grows in cycles and nails change gradually.

This technology does not treat every skin concern. Results depend on the target’s colour, depth and condition, as well as hair thickness, growth cycle, skin tone and aftercare. It may reduce unwanted hair without removing every follicle, and a nail may continue to look abnormal while healthy nail grows out. A consultation is needed when a lesion is changing, bleeding or painful rather than assuming a cosmetic laser is suitable.

Depending on the goal, alternatives can include another laser wavelength, light-based treatment, topical medicine, oral medicine, mechanical hair removal or observation. The right choice depends on whether the target is hair, nail, pigment or another condition, and on your medical history.

Before treatment, share your medicines, recent tanning, tendency to scar and any history of pigment changes. Ask which device settings and number of visits fit your target. You may feel warmth, snapping or stinging during pulses; cooling and protective eyewear are commonly used. Follow instructions about shaving, sun exposure and products on the treated area.

Temporary redness, swelling or sensitivity can occur after treatment. Darkening, lightening, blistering or burns are possible when energy, skin preparation or aftercare is unsuitable. Do not treat an unexplained changing spot as a cosmetic target. Contact the treating clinic if pain increases, blisters develop, or the area shows signs of infection.
