What is a diode laser?

A diode laser is a medical device that produces a focused beam of light at a selected wavelength. In dermatology, the energy can be absorbed more strongly by a target such as pigment in a hair follicle than by nearby tissue. The device is adjusted for the treatment area, skin characteristics, and clinical goal. An 808nm diode is one commonly recognised form.

How is it used?

The clinician cleans and examines the area, then places the handpiece against or just above the skin. A cooling method may be used to make the session more comfortable and protect the surface. Pulses are delivered across the selected area; you may notice warmth, snapping, or brief stinging. For hair reduction, the light is absorbed by pigment in growing follicles, so a course of appointments is commonly planned because follicles are not all active at the same time. See Laser Hair Removal for the treatment context.

What are its limits?

A diode laser does not treat every skin concern, and it cannot assess whether a changing mole or persistent mark is medically concerning. Results depend on the target, hair-growth cycle, skin response, and settings. Light or grey hair may respond less because it contains little pigment. Darker skin can need more cautious settings to reduce unwanted heating of surface pigment. The clinician may postpone treatment over irritated or recently tanned skin.

What alternatives may be considered?

Depending on the goal, options can include shaving, waxing, electrolysis, topical medicines, or another light-based device. Each option differs in how it reaches the target, how much maintenance it needs, and which skin or hair features it suits. A consultation should distinguish cosmetic hair reduction from treatment of a lesion that needs diagnosis.

What does this mean for a patient?

Ask which target is being treated, whether your hair or skin features are suitable, and how the area should be prepared. Avoid plucking hairs when the plan relies on follicle pigment, and disclose recent tanning, medicines that increase light sensitivity, or a history of unusual scarring. Follow the clinic’s aftercare advice, especially around heat and sun exposure.

Safety and aftercare

Temporary redness, warmth, swelling around follicles, or sensitivity can occur after treatment. Rarely, the skin can blister, change colour, or scar. Eye protection is required because laser light can injure the eyes. Contact the treating clinic if pain is increasing, blisters develop, or redness spreads rather than settling.

Questions people ask

Does a diode laser remove hair in one session?

No. Hair follicles cycle through growth phases, so treatment is usually planned across multiple appointments.

Can every skin tone be treated?

Many skin tones can be considered, but settings and cooling need individual assessment, particularly after tanning.
