Hair loss and age: what should you know?

Short answer
Hair loss can occur at different ages, and the pattern, speed, scalp findings, and associated symptoms matter more than age alone.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Age is one clue
- Distribution and speed often provide more useful diagnostic information.
- Track change
- Consistent photographs make gradual progression easier to discuss.
How age fits the picture
Inherited thinning may become more apparent over time, often as a receding hairline, crown thinning, or a widening part. Sudden diffuse shedding can follow illness, major stress, dietary change, or a medication at any age and may fit Telogen Effluvium. Smooth patches can occur with Alopecia Areata; scale and broken hairs can point toward Scalp Ringworm. Hair pulled repeatedly into tight styles can cause Traction Alopecia. Age may guide the questions, but it does not identify the cause by itself.
What to record and try
Take clear scalp photographs in consistent lighting and note when the change began, where it is visible, and whether hairs are shedding from the root or breaking. Review family history, recent illness, menstrual or hormonal changes, diet, and medicines with a clinician. Choose gentle washing and styling, avoid tight pulling, and do not start prescription treatment without checking whether it suits your health and situation.
When an appointment matters
Book a dermatology assessment for rapid progression, clearly defined bald patches, scalp tenderness, redness, crusting, marked scale, or broken hairs. Seek prompt care if hair loss occurs with severe fatigue, faintness, breathlessness, or other new body symptoms. Children and teenagers with sudden loss or scalp inflammation should be assessed rather than monitored without guidance.
Questions to bring
Which pattern does my examination show? Could this be inherited thinning, Telogen Effluvium, or Alopecia Areata? Do I need blood tests? Which styling habits or medicines could be contributing? What change would mean I should return sooner?

Questions people ask
Is hair loss normal with ageing?
Some thinning can accompany ageing, but sudden, patchy, painful, or inflamed loss is not something to dismiss as age alone.
Can young people lose hair?
Yes. Inherited patterns, temporary shedding, autoimmune conditions, infection, and traction can affect younger people too.
