Short answer

Hair falling out can reflect temporary shedding, inherited pattern loss, scalp disease, inflammation, or repeated pulling, so the pattern and timing matter.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Pattern to note
Diffuse shedding, gradual thinning, smooth patches, or hairline loss
Useful history
Recent illness, stress, diet change, medicines, and hairstyles

A dermatologist can assess the scalp and follicles

What the pattern may mean

Diffuse shedding across the scalp may follow an illness, major stress, surgery, rapid weight change, or a medication change. A clinician may call this Telogen Effluvium. Gradual thinning at the temples or crown can fit Male Pattern Hair Loss, while widening of the part may fit Female Pattern Hair Loss. Smooth, sharply defined patches can occur with Alopecia Areata. Scaling, broken hairs, tenderness, or swollen areas may point toward Scalp Ringworm or another scalp problem. Hairline thinning can also follow repeated tension from tight braids, extensions, or pulled-back styles; this pattern is called Traction Alopecia.

Hair loss is a symptom rather than a diagnosis. The history, scalp examination, and sometimes blood tests help distinguish shedding from follicle damage. New hair loss does not by itself show which condition is responsible.

What you can do now

Note when the shedding began, whether it is sudden or gradual, and whether it is spread across the scalp or limited to patches. Photograph the part, temples, and hairline in similar lighting so changes are easier to compare. Use gentle washing and detangling, avoid tight styles and harsh chemical processing, and tell a clinician about recent illness, dietary restriction, stress, new medicines, or hormonal changes. Do not start supplements or prescription treatment without checking whether a deficiency or another cause is present. A dermatologist can examine the scalp and discuss options such as hair restoration or Finasteride Treatment when appropriate.

When to seek care

Arrange a clinical assessment if shedding is persistent, rapidly increasing, leaving smooth patches, or accompanied by scalp pain, marked itch, redness, scaling, pus, or broken hairs. Seek prompt care for sudden extensive loss, eyebrow or eyelash loss, or symptoms such as unusual fatigue, unexplained weight change, or feeling unwell. Earlier review matters when tight hairstyles are causing tenderness or a receding hairline, because ongoing pulling can injure follicles.

Questions for your doctor

Ask: Does the distribution suggest shedding, pattern loss, patchy loss, infection, or traction? Could a recent illness, medicine, nutritional change, or hormonal change be contributing? Do I need scalp examination, blood tests, or a treatment review? Which styling practices should I stop, and how will we monitor regrowth?

Questions people ask

Does hair falling out always mean a serious condition?

No. Temporary shedding is possible, but persistent, patchy, painful, inflamed, or rapidly changing loss should be assessed.

Can tight hairstyles contribute to hair loss?

Yes. Repeated tension from tight styles, extensions, or braids can contribute to Traction Alopecia and should be addressed early.
