Hair falling and breaking: how to tell the difference

A shed hair is usually a full-length strand with a small bulb-like end, while a broken hair is shorter and may have a blunt or frayed tip. Breakage often leaves uneven lengths, rough texture, or short hairs around the hairline. Shedding can make the part look wider or reduce density more evenly.

Frequent straightening, bleaching, coloring, heat, vigorous brushing, and tight hairstyles can weaken the shaft. Hair loss conditions can also cause hairs to fall from the root, and scalp ringworm may cause scaling with broken hairs. The pattern matters more than the amount seen on one wash day.

Pause harsh chemical services, lower heat, use conditioner, and detangle from the ends upward with a wide-toothed comb. Avoid rubbing wet hair with a towel and rotate away from styles that pull the same areas. Keep a simple record of new products, styling changes, illness, and the location of thinning.

If the scalp is itchy, scaly, tender, or developing bare areas, arrange an examination rather than treating breakage alone. A clinician can inspect roots and shafts and choose treatment based on the pattern.
