What should you know about hair allergy test?

Hair can retain traces of substances from the environment, but analysing a hair sample does not reliably show whether your immune system reacts to an allergen. A proper assessment connects symptoms, timing, exposure and examination findings. Depending on the concern, a clinician may consider a skin prick test or an allergy blood test. These tests are selected for a specific suspected trigger, rather than used as a broad search for every possible allergy.

Allergy symptoms may affect the nose, eyes, skin or breathing. Allergic rhinitis can cause sneezing and a blocked or itchy nose, while allergic conjunctivitis can make the eyes itchy and watery. Hair loss or scalp irritation has other possible explanations, including hair-care products and skin conditions, so it should not automatically be labelled an allergy.

Write down the product, food, animal, dust or other exposure that came before symptoms, along with how quickly symptoms appeared and how long they lasted. Take the product label or a photograph to the appointment. Do not stop prescribed medicines or remove many foods from your diet solely because of a hair report. A clinician can decide whether testing is useful and explain what a positive result means in your situation.

Seek emergency help for trouble breathing, throat or tongue swelling, faintness, or rapidly spreading symptoms after an exposure; these can be signs of anaphylaxis. Arrange a routine review for repeated reactions, persistent wheeze, ongoing nasal symptoms, or a scalp rash that is painful, crusted or spreading. Asthma symptoms also deserve medical assessment, especially when breathing becomes difficult.
