Haemophilus pneumonia

Pneumonia inflames the small air spaces and surrounding lung tissue. Haemophilus influenzae can be one bacterial cause, and it is different from the influenza virus that causes flu. Symptoms can overlap with COVID-19, influenza, and other causes of pneumonia, so symptoms alone cannot identify the organism.

A clinician may listen to your chest, check oxygen levels, and decide whether imaging or laboratory tests are needed. Older adults, young children, and people with long-term lung or immune problems can become unwell more quickly.

Seek medical assessment when a new cough is accompanied by fever, chills, breathlessness, chest pain, marked weakness, or phlegm. If bacterial pneumonia is suspected, the clinician chooses treatment according to your examination and medical history. Take prescribed medicines as directed and do not share antibiotics.

Rest, drink fluids if suitable for you, avoid smoking, and monitor whether breathing and alertness are changing. Keep follow-up appointments, particularly if symptoms are not settling or you have a condition that affects your lungs.

Get emergency help for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, new confusion, fainting, inability to keep fluids down, or rapidly worsening weakness. Urgent assessment is also needed when a high fever persists, chest pain is severe, or breathing becomes difficult at rest.

Ask which tests are appropriate, whether the illness could be viral or bacterial, and how to take any prescribed treatment. Ask what improvement to expect, when to return for review, and whether close contacts need advice.
