What should you know about haemophilus influenza b?

Short answer
Haemophilus influenzae type b, or Hib, is a bacterium that can cause serious infections such as meningitis, pneumonia, and bloodstream infection, so warning symptoms need urgent medical care.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Organism
- Hib is a bacterium, not the virus that causes seasonal flu.
- Possible illness
- It can cause pneumonia, meningitis, bloodstream infection, or joint infection.
- Emergency signs
- Breathing difficulty, confusion, seizure, stiff neck, collapse, or hard-to-wake sleepiness.
What Hib infection means
Hib is not the same organism as the viruses that cause Influenza. It can spread through respiratory droplets and close contact, and some people may carry it without obvious illness. When infection becomes invasive, it can affect the lungs, blood, brain coverings, joints, or skin. Symptoms depend on the site and may include Fever, Chills, Cough, Headache, Fatigue, or Feeling Generally Unwell. Meningitis can cause severe headache, stiff neck, light sensitivity, vomiting, confusion, or unusual sleepiness. Infants may show poor feeding or a change in behaviour instead of typical symptoms.
What to do
Contact a clinician promptly for fever with worsening illness, breathing symptoms, or unusual drowsiness, particularly in a young child or someone with reduced immunity. Do not share cups or utensils while an infection is being assessed, and follow advice about close contacts if Hib is confirmed. Diagnosis may involve examination, a Blood Test, and other samples or imaging. Treatment requires clinician-prescribed antibiotics; do not use leftover medicine or stop a prescribed course without guidance. Keep vaccinations up to date according to the local schedule.
When to seek emergency care
Call emergency services for difficulty breathing, blue or grey lips, a seizure, collapse, confusion, a stiff neck, a rapidly spreading rash, or a child who is difficult to wake. Severe headache with fever, repeated vomiting, or marked sensitivity to light also needs immediate assessment. Hib disease can worsen quickly, so do not wait for symptoms to become more complete before seeking help.
Questions for your doctor
Could this illness be Hib, Influenza, Pneumonia, or another infection? Which tests are needed, and should close contacts receive preventive treatment? Is the child or adult up to date with Hib vaccination, and what follow-up should we arrange?
