Short answer

H1N1 pneumonia is an influenza-associated lung infection that can cause breathing problems and needs prompt assessment when symptoms worsen.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Cause
Influenza-associated infection and inflammation in the lungs
Possible symptoms
Fever, cough, chills, phlegm, and breathlessness
Urgent concern
Worsening breathing or sudden deterioration

How it can develop

Influenza may inflame the airways and lung tissue. Pneumonia develops when infection and inflammation affect the small air sacs where oxygen passes into the blood. H1N1 pneumonia may cause fever, chills, cough, tiredness, chest discomfort, breathlessness, or coughing up phlegm. Symptoms can overlap with other causes of pneumonia, influenza, and COVID-19, so the label cannot be confirmed from symptoms alone.

A clinician may assess breathing, oxygen levels, chest findings, and the course of illness. Tests can help identify the cause or severity and guide treatment. Some people become seriously unwell, particularly when breathing is affected or infection spreads beyond the lungs.

What to do next

Contact a clinician promptly if influenza symptoms are worsening, breathing feels harder, fever persists, or you are coughing up increasing phlegm. Rest, drink fluids if you can, and follow prescribed treatment. Avoid smoking and avoid taking antibiotics unless a clinician has prescribed them for a suspected bacterial infection.

Limit close contact while feverish or acutely unwell, improve ventilation, and wash hands after coughing or sneezing. Tell the clinician about pregnancy, long-term conditions, immune suppression, and medicines, because these details can affect assessment and treatment.

Emergency warning signs

Call emergency services for severe difficulty breathing, blue or grey lips, new confusion, fainting, severe chest pain, inability to stay awake, or a rapid deterioration. Urgent assessment is also needed when a person cannot keep fluids down, passes very little urine, or becomes unusually weak. Sepsis can be a life-threatening response to infection and requires emergency care.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether your symptoms suggest pneumonia, which tests are needed, how to monitor breathing at home, and which changes should trigger emergency care.

Questions people ask

Does H1N1 always cause pneumonia?

No. H1N1 can cause influenza without pneumonia, while pneumonia can have several infectious causes.

Can I tell H1N1 pneumonia from COVID-19 at home?

No. The symptoms can overlap, so clinical assessment and testing may be needed.
