What should you know about gout needle aspiration?

A clinician cleans the skin, uses local numbing when appropriate, and guides a needle into the swollen joint to draw out fluid. The sample can be examined for urate crystals and signs of infection. Removing some fluid may also ease pressure, although it does not remove the underlying tendency to form crystals. Aspiration can be especially useful when a first hot swollen joint could represent gout, infection, injury, or another inflammatory condition.

The ankle, knee, and other joints may be assessed this way. Tell the clinician about blood-thinning medicines, allergies, skin infection near the area, bleeding problems, and chronic kidney disease before the procedure.

Ask how to take your usual medicines on the day and whether any medicine needs adjustment; do not make changes independently. Wear clothing that allows access to the joint. Afterward, keep the dressing clean, follow activity advice, and watch the puncture site. Your clinician will explain when results are available and how they affect treatment.

Contact the care team for increasing redness, drainage, bleeding that does not settle, or worsening pain at the puncture site. Seek urgent help for fever, chills, severe swelling, or feeling acutely unwell after aspiration. Before the procedure, urgent assessment is needed for a rapidly worsening hot joint or fever.
