What should you know about the medical term gout?

Urate is produced when the body breaks down purines. If urate builds up, crystals can collect in a joint and activate inflammation. A flare may cause sudden severe pain, swelling, warmth, redness, and marked sensitivity to touch. Gout is sometimes called gouty arthritis or uric acid arthritis. It is different from simply having a high urate result: symptoms, examination, and the clinical context all matter.

Gout may affect the big toe, ankle, knee, or other joints. Chronic kidney disease and some medicines can influence urate handling, and obesity can be associated with gout risk. These associations do not diagnose gout in an individual.

A clinician may review the timing and location of attacks, examine the joint, and request blood testing. When the diagnosis is uncertain, a sample of joint fluid can be examined for crystals and infection. During a flare, prescribed anti-inflammatory treatment may reduce symptoms. Longer-term treatment may lower urate and reduce future attacks; it should be selected around kidney function, other conditions, and current medicines.

Get urgent care for a hot swollen joint with fever, chills, confusion, or rapidly worsening illness. Arrange medical review for a first suspected flare, repeated attacks, persistent swelling, or symptoms that do not improve as expected. A new joint problem should not be labelled gout without appropriate assessment.
