Gout in the hand: symptoms and care

Urate crystals can trigger inflammation in a finger joint, knuckle, or other hand joint. A flare may begin quickly and make ordinary tasks such as holding a cup, fastening clothes, or making a fist difficult. The area can be tender to touch and may look shiny from swelling. Repeated inflammation can lead to deposits called tophi around joints or under the skin, but a lump has several possible causes and needs examination. Hand symptoms can also follow trauma or come from tendon, nerve, or other joint problems.

Remove tight rings before swelling increases. Rest the hand, keep it raised when comfortable, and use a cloth-wrapped cold pack briefly. Gentle movement within comfort can help prevent prolonged stiffness, but do not force a painful joint. Use only medicines recommended for you; anti-inflammatory treatment may not suit people with kidney, stomach, heart, or blood-pressure concerns. A first episode, recurrent episode, or unexplained hand lump deserves a clinical review.

Get urgent help if the hand or a joint is hot and swollen with fever, chills, spreading redness, pus, or severe worsening pain. Infection can damage a joint and may look like a gout flare. Seek prompt assessment after a significant injury, if a finger changes colour, or if numbness or weakness develops.
