Gout in a finger joint: symptoms and next steps

Short answer
Gout in a finger joint may produce rapid swelling, heat and severe tenderness, but a new hot joint should be checked to confirm the cause.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How a gout flare affects the joint
Urate crystals can trigger intense inflammation inside a finger joint. The joint may look red or shiny, feel warmer than the surrounding skin and hurt when you bend it or touch it. Some people notice symptoms after a period without problems, while others have lingering stiffness between flares. A visible firm lump can develop over time when crystal deposits remain. These features can occur with gout, but they are not exclusive to it. An injury, bacterial infection or another inflammatory arthritis can also cause a painful swollen joint, so the appearance alone cannot confirm the diagnosis.
Steps that may help
Remove tight rings before swelling increases. Rest the hand, support it in a comfortable position and use a cloth-covered cold pack for short periods. Keep normal hydration unless you have been given a fluid restriction. Take only medicines recommended for you; some anti-inflammatory medicines are unsuitable with kidney disease, stomach problems or certain other treatments. If you already have a gout plan, follow it as prescribed and contact the prescriber if it is not controlling the flare. Longer-term treatment can lower urate and reduce new crystal deposits when it is appropriate for you.
Warning signs
Get prompt care if the finger joint is hot and swollen with fever, chills, a cut, pus, red streaks or rapidly worsening pain. Also seek help if the finger becomes pale, blue, numb or difficult to move. Arrange an appointment for a first episode, recurring attacks, persistent swelling or a firm lump. A clinician may need to distinguish gout from infection or injury before selecting treatment.
Useful questions
Ask what supports a gout diagnosis, whether the joint should be sampled, how to protect movement while it heals, and whether preventive treatment is suitable. Mention your medicines, kidney health, previous attacks and any recent injury.

Questions people ask
Can a finger joint flare be gout even without a big toe problem?
Yes. Gout can affect other joints, including a finger joint, but assessment is needed because several conditions can look alike.
Can I keep using the hand?
Gentle use within comfort may be reasonable, but avoid gripping, forceful bending and pressure while the joint is acutely inflamed.
