Gout in the elbow: symptoms and care

Urate crystals can inflame the elbow joint or the fluid-filled sac over its point. The skin may feel hot and the arm may be uncomfortable when bending or leaning on a surface. A lump or swelling at the back of the elbow is not automatically gout; trauma, bursitis, infection, and other arthritis can appear similar.

Assessment may include checking movement, skin, temperature, medicines, and previous attacks. When infection or crystal arthritis is uncertain, a clinician may recommend sampling fluid. Tell them about kidney disease, recent injury, fever, and medicines that affect fluid or urate balance.

Rest the arm from lifting and avoid leaning on the sore elbow. Support it comfortably, raise it when practical, and use a wrapped cold pack for short periods. Do not press, massage, or puncture a swollen lump. Take only medication that has been checked for your other conditions and treatments.

After recovery, follow up if attacks repeat or elbow movement remains limited. A clinician can review urate management, kidney function, medicine interactions, and ways to reduce pressure on the elbow during work or sleep.

Seek urgent care for fever, chills, rapidly increasing swelling, spreading redness, drainage, an open wound, or feeling unwell with a hot elbow. Infection may need immediate treatment. Get assessed after a significant injury, for a first suspected flare, or when pain and restricted movement persist.
